Easier and cheaper to keep than many larger animals, they will keep a pony company, pull a cart, and produce the perfect milk for many artisan cheeses or meat for some of the most up-and-coming ethnic cuisines. For anyone thinking of acquiring a goat or starting a herd--for whatever reason--this book is an essential resource. Written by an authority on goat breeding and behavior, this approachable guide covers every component of raising goats for fun or profit, meat or milk. Beginning with the basics--history and behavior, types and breeds--Carol Amundson answers all of a prospective owners questions about getting a goat, from land requirements and regulations to choosing or assessing particular animals or breeds. In a clear and engaging way, she goes into the details of housing and feeding, breeding and milking, training and showing, transporting and marketing goats of all kinds--as well as the dos and donts of keeping them healthy from birth to old age. How to raise Goats November 30, 2009 3p Farms (Anthony, FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very useful and informative. A good reference book for our farm. You will find yourself going back to it again and again.
Good work.
Great book for all ages November 12, 2009 B. Allen (Arlington, WA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have a 4-H group that is always wanting more information on goats, specifically dairy goats. This book gives a wide variety of information and has great pictures for visualization. I would highly recommend this book for beginner to intermediate knowledge on goats. It is current and offers information in a different way than you might get from Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats. (another book I would recommend)
From a longtime goat farmer who explains all the pros and cons of goat-raising June 17, 2009 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Whether you're raising goats for milk or meat or have them as pets, HOW TO RAISE GOATS provides an excellent survey covering everything from choosing among breeds to proper care, feeding, and keeping a herd healthy. Rural collections in particular will find patrons interested in these specifics, coming from a longtime goat farmer who explains all the pros and cons of goat-raising.
Good, overall information March 18, 2009 Patrick Beart (Portland, OR USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
"Pet" focus with a "Farm" emphasis!
A reasonably broad topic book, with a very nice introduction to the choosing/breeding/raising areas and some great photo-to-text reinforcement. This book covers the general information well. Especially good as a general guide.
The photos and illustrations make the book. Well put together!
